NOTE:   This 2-day training program is taught by UW-Madison's Certified Public Manager (CPM) program in a partnership with OSER.    This program, along with the 3-day program "Management/Personnel Administration," satisfies the statutory training requirement for new supervisors.

Program Description: Management: LEADERSHIP introduces supervisors, managers, and other attendees to the fundamentals of management, leadership and supervision.  This training program explores concepts of supervision and communication in a variety of settings using different leadership methods and techniques. Participation in this program fulfills part of the statutory training requirements for new supervisors. Major topics in the two–day program include:

First Day:
-Introduction to Supervision:   Best Supervisor/Worst Supervisor
-The Public Management Profession:   A Public Trust and a High Calling
-Learning to Think Like a Manager
-Situational Leadership
-Your Power Bases as a Leader and Manager
-Developing Leadership Credibility
-Quality, Productivity & Customer Service
-Performance and the Marginal Employee

Second Day:
-Building a Unified Team
-Communication and Conflict Management
-Motivating Employees
-The Marginal Employee (revisited)
-Delegation
-Planning/Time Management

Audience/PrerequisitesTargeted for newly appointed State of Wisconsin Supervisors and Managers, but...
* All State of Wisconsin supervisors and managers, as well as non-represented/confidential staff (such as lead workers), are welcome to attend. Experienced supervisors may take this training if they feel they need a "refresher".
* We only accept registrations for the full two-day program.
* Register with OSER for this program.
* This 2-day program counts towards Phase I credit in the UW-Madison's Certified Public Manager (CPM) program.  Your instructor will explain how this program can be counted in the CPM program.
* As a supplement to training for new supervisors/managers, the Department of Administration offers a free half-day Risk Management/Safety seminar for state supervisors/managers on the afternoon prior to Day 1 of the Leadership program.
